Letter of Recommendation (piano)
I am honored to write this recommendation for Kathleen Y. Kim. In fact, I was simply delighted when she asked me for a letter
of recommendation. The first time I met Kathleen was when she just entered high school for arts; she performed Andante
Spianato et Grande Polonaise Brillante Op. 22 by Frédéric Chopin for me that day. There, I saw the effort that she put on to play the piece beautifully, showing unexpected maturity and passion for music. Her first impression on me also made me think that
she was shy.
However, after teaching her for seven years, now I know that underneath the quiet surface, she holds such great energy and
potential. Kathleen is a quick learner; her musical comprehension works at a lightning speed. Sometimes, she would surprise me with her unconventional yet intriguing way of thinking. These surprises were usually pleasant, if not sensational for me and other professors who watched her approach to music turned what could be dull music to undeniably fascinating performance.
I watched Kathleen continuously strive for fulfillment of her passion for piano. There is no doubt in my mind that she has so
much potential and love for music. These characteristics, on top of what I mentioned earlier regarding her personality, will
become valuable assets to her as a musician. Additionally, her records of awards from various international and national
competitions simply prove that she will, indeed, succeed no matter where she goes. I can most certainly say that Kathleen has a promising future, just by seeing her deep passion for piano.
If you choose to accept Kathleen to your school, she will bring her warm and charming personality with her and do exceedingly well. Along with further studies, she will become an exceptional pianist without a doubt.
Letter of Recommendation (violin)
This is a letter of reference for Ms. Kathleen Y. Kim who is applying for admission to the Curtis Institute as a BM degree seeking student. As her private lesson teacher for the past seven years, I can give you a detailed assessment of her abilities.
When Kathleen entered Yewon School, which is the best arts middle school in Korea, I saw her musical potentials. The first
official violin performance with an orchestral accompaniment was Seoul Academy Ensemble Youth Concert in 2010. At the time, she was a diamond in the rough, lacking refined technique or sophisticated expressions but for the past five years I watched her grow and absorb every lesson, music at an incredible speed. Kathleen has won prizes in countless competitions such as Ewha & Kyunghyang Concurs.
Ms. Kim is well-organized and concentrates on her studies. She was awarded for performing excellence throughout her
middle school years and up to now. She also is quick learner and enthusiastic about her performances and self-motivated to put in long hours and work efficiently. After teaching her for more than 7 years, now I know that underneath the quiet surface, she
holds such great energy and potential.
In summary, I recommend Ms. Kathleen Y. Kim to you with confidence as a promising young violinist. I firmly believe that once
she is admitted to the Curtis Institute of Johns Hopkins University, she will make a memorable contribution to your Music
community.
Letter of Recommendation (cello)
I became Kathleen’s mentor in 2012 when I met her for the first time. I was impressed with her earnestness and passionate
attitude towards learning so I was eager to help her preparation to study abroad.
Kathleen is always working hard to improve her practice skills and strives to enhance her performance. I watched many of my
students apply to prestigious University and begin their studies at Indiana University. Comparing Kathleen to my other students, she has wanted to study in the United States for a long time and dreamt of attending Indiana University, making her more
qualified to become a student there.
I have no doubt that her bright and genuine attitude towards music would fit in perfectly with Indiana University’s philosophy of raising academically well-educated professional musicians.
Letter of Recommendation (clarinet)
I have been teaching Kathleen since she was a 14 years old middle school student. Like Kathleen, I began my clarinet studies in my teens and graduated from the same high school that she attended. For the past 60 years, I performed in various locations
around the world and taught countless students.
The reason behind my recommendation for Kathleen is based on not only her musical talents but also her heart. She is,
hands down, the kindest student I have ever taught. She understands others and helping those around her even if the
harm comes in her way. In addition, she has great faith in herself and meets any challenges with much confidence. Just looking at these traits, I can assure you that she is qualified to study at the Juilliard School.
When Kathleen entered Yewon School, which is the best arts middle school in Korea, I saw her musical potentials and suggested performing with the Seoul Academy Ensemble.
That performance was her first official clarinet performance with an orchestral accompaniment. At the time, she was a diamond
in the rough, lacking refined technique or sophisticated expressions but for the past six years I watched her grow and absorb
every lesson and music at an incredible speed.
Kathleen won prizes in countless competitions such as Ewha & Kyunghyang Music Competitions – the most popular competition for Korean music students – and Korea Herald Music Competitions.
Kathleen sincerely wishes to heal the children who are sick through her music, and this life goal of hers makes her a solid candidate to match Juilliard’s love for its local community. I wholeheartedly recommend Kathleen to be a part of the Juilliard School
and I wish her the best.
Letter of Recommendation (percussion)
I am very pleased to write this recommendation on behalf of Kathleen Y. Kim.
Kathleen has been a student in the accelerated liberal arts program at Walnut Hill School for the Arts for her entire five years of high school. During that period I have observed her grow into a poised and accomplished young woman. She is an exceptional
student with excellent grades resulting from work habits
Kathleen has superior interpersonal skills and works equally well independently or in a group setting. She also displays good
leadership skills when involved in group projects. She has been very well-liked and respected by both her peers and teachers.
Among her many service activities at the school, Kathleen has been a first percussionist for the school’s orchestra and marching band for the past two years. She also took part in the Mentoring Program and helped a number of juniors navigate their way
through their first year of high school.
Kathleen has shown an ongoing interest in world affairs and international development. It is my understanding that she intends
to pursue an Honors degree in Political Science or Sociology. She has traveled extensively and has written outstanding reports
with observations on conditions she has witnessed throughout the world
I believe that Kathleen Y. Kim has tremendous potential as a student and I feel quite confident that she would be an asset to
both student life and academics at Harvard University.
