UIUC 음대는 1895년에 설립됐지만 1865년 3월 대학 개교 기념일에 작곡가 George Root가 그가 작곡한 교가를 부를 합창단을 지휘할 때부터 대학 community에 뿌리를 내렸습니다. 1893년에 60명의 남자로만 구성된 군악대가 학교를 대표했고 이듬 해 

총장이던 Andrew Draper가 좀더 많은 여학생들의 관심을 끌기 위해 음대를 설립했습니다. 45명의 학생으로 시작됐으며, 

Ladies’ Glee Club이 8개의 활동적인 악단 중 하나였지요. 이론과 실기의 균형이 처음부터 의도된 목표였고. 현재 100명 정도의 교수진에 800여명의 학생, 학교 내에 상주하는 30여명의 전문 staff가있으며 교내, 교외에서 수 백 차례의 콘서트를 주최하고 

있습니다.

미국음대로 유학을 생각하는 학생들에게 상당히 매력 있는좋 학교임은 분명하지만 원서접수 마감일까지 토플점수를 제출하지 않으면 오디션 초청을 하지 않고, 학업 성적이 아주 지 않으면 입학을 불허하는 등 전형적인 academic 명문대로서의 전통을
