Strings Audition
Information
Audition requirements for performance majors (BM and MM)
for violin, viola, cello and double bass:
1) Any two contrasting works, or two individual movements of works, from the standard repertoire, by two different composers. The two selections can consist of movements of sonatas, concertos, concert pieces, shorter repertoire pieces, showpieces, or etudes. Only one etude may be used as audition piece. No jazz or popular styles. Candidates may bring an accompanist if they wish, but it is not required.
2) One scale in major and minor, in the key of candidate’s choice. 3 octaves for violin and viola, 4 octaves for cello, 2 octaves for double bass.
Auditioning candidates may be asked to perform a small portion of basic sight-reading.
Audition requirements for non-performance majors (BA) for
violin, viola, cello and double bass:
1) Any two contrasting works, or two individual movements of works, by two different composers. The two selections can consist of movements of sonatas, concertos, concert pieces, shorter repertoire pieces, showpieces, or etudes. Only one etude may be used as audition piece. All classical epochs and genres, as well as jazz and popular styles are accepted. Candidates may bring an accompanist if they wish, but it is not required.
Auditioning candidates may be asked to perform a small portion of basic sight-reading.
