String Audition Information

 

 

 

Violin (MM)

 

l  Bach Violin Sonatas and Partitas (BWV 1001-1006): two contrasting movements from the same sonata or partita or Chaconne

 

l  1st or 3rd movement from a Romantic or Post-Romantic concerto (written after 1800)


Exceptions:

 

ü  Bruch No. 1 or Wieniawski No. 2

ü  The 1st movement must be supplemented with the 3rd movement

ü  Lalo Symphonie Espagnole: the 1st movement must be supplemented with the 2nd or 3rd movement.



l  A concert piece of your choice:

 

ü  At least two selections must be memorized

ü  Auditions, both live or recorded, must be without accompaniment of any kind

ü  Review the UNT Violin Audition Requirements prior to submitting your application

 

 

Violin (DMA)

 

l  Bach Violin Sonatas and Partitas (BWV 1001-1006) - one of the following: 


    ♠All movements of Partita in E Major 

    ♠At least two movements (with the Doubles) from Partita in B minor
    ♠
Chaconne from Partita in D minor 
    ♠
Adagio and Fugue from Sonata in G minor
    ♠
Grave and Fugue from Sonata in A minor 
    ♠Adagio and Fugue from Sonata in C Major

 

l  1st or 3rd movement from a Romantic or Post-Romantic concerto (written after 1800)   
(Exceptions: Bruch No. 1, Wieniawski No. 2, Saint-Saëns No. 3: all movements must be prepared; Mendelssohn E minor and Barber: both 1st and 3rd movements must be prepared 

 

l  One virtuosic work by Paganini, Sarasate, Wieniawski, Ernst, Ysaye, Ravel, Saint-Saens, or an equivalent


                           OR 


One caprice by Paganini (exclusions: No. 13, 16) 

 

 

 

l  A work of your choice composed after 1970.


Audition requirement:

 

ü  Bach, Concerto and a virtuosic piece/caprice to be performed from memory

ü  Auditions, both live or recorded, must be without accompaniment of any kind

Viola

Viola (MM)

 

 

l  A recital of approximately 30 minutes duration is required.

l  Single movements of works may be played.

l  At least two contrasting styles of music should be represented.

 

 

Viola (DMA)

 

 

l  One full recital demonstrating different styles.

l  An unaccompanied work or movement of your choice should be included and a portion of the program should be memorized.

 

 

 

Cello

Cello (MM)

 

 

l  A recital of approximately 30 minutes duration is required.

l  Single movements of works may be played.

l  Three contrasting styles of music should be represented. 

 

Suggested Repertoire: 

 

ü  Any Bach or Reger Suite, several movements

ü  Any movement of a concerto, such as: Haydn, D major; Schumann

ü  Dvorak; Barber; Bloch, Schelomo; Tchaikowsky, Rococo Variations; or equivalent. Virtuoso pieces such as: Dvorak, Rondo op. 94

ü  Bruch, kol Nidre; Hindemith, Capriccio, etc.

 

 

Cello (DMA)

 

 

l  One full recital demonstrating different styles.

l  An unaccompanied work or movement of your choice should be included and a portion of the program should be memorized.

 

 

 

Double Bass

Double Bass (MM)

 

l  Two movements from any Bach cello suite

l  Two movements from the standard concerto literature, One other solo work demonstrating the range and diversity of the applicant's abilities

l  Four standard orchestral excerpts. At least one solo work should be from memory.

 

 

Double Bass (DMA)

 

 

l  One full recital demonstrating different styles.

l  An unaccompanied work (or movement) of Bach should be included.

l  One virtuosic concert piece or a standard concerto should be included. A portion of the program should be memorized.

Harp

 

Review the UNT String Audition Requirements prior to submitting your application. 

 

Harp (MM)

 

l  A solo or concerto performed from memory, displaying a minimum difficulty level represented by the following suggested works. (Solos of a higher difficulty level may be substituted.):

 

ü  Impromptu (Faure)

ü  Variations sur un theme dans le style ancien (Salzedo)

ü  Fantaisie sur un theme de J. Haydn (Grandjany)

ü  One sonata from the 20th century by Hindemith, Houdy, Tailleferre, Flagello

 

   or

 

ü  Glanville-Hicks, Danse sacrée et danse profane (Debussy)

ü  Introduction et Allegro (Ravel)

ü  Any of Posse’s Eight Great Concert Etudes for Harp.

 

l  A second solo of your choice, performed from memory. The work should be in a contrasting style and period, compared to the first solo.

l  One cadenza from an orchestral work such as: Waltz of the Flowers or Swan Lake (Tchaikovsky), Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra (Britten), or Capriccio Espagnol (Rimsky-Korsakov).

l  Graduate-level students must display evidence that they have given a 45-minute to one-hour recital or the equivalent. Please also provide a complete list of previously-studied repertoire.

 

 

Harp (DMA)

 

A memorized recital of approximately 30 minutes is required, representing at least three contrasting style periods
