Woodwind Audition Information

 

 

BASSOON

 

A prescreening recording is not required, except for doctor of musical arts applicants. If you wish to upload a video recording to your application, you may do so. The recording should consist of selections from the audition repertoire. Doctor of musical arts applicants should record approximately 30 minutes of the repertoire below. 

 

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Undergraduate

 

  • Major and harmonic minor scales (not required on video recording)
  • Milde Scale or Arpeggio etude
  • Solo piece selected by the student
  •  

Graduate

 

  • Major and harmonic minor scales (not required on video recording)
  • A major concerto; e.g., Mozart, Hummel, or Weber
  • Selected contrasting orchestral excerpts

 

 

CLARINET

 

A prescreening video is required. To accommodate prescreening, applicants are strongly urged to submit applications well before the deadline of December 1. Each piece of repertoire must be unedited and recorded separately. 

 

PRESCREEN REQUIREMENTS:

 

  • Any Rose etude
  • Exposition of Mozart Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622
  • Paganini (edited by Alamiro Giampieri), Caprice 1, 5 or 6 from 14 Caprices (Ricordi edition)

 

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Undergraduate

 

  • All major and minor scales and arpeggios (not required on video recordings)
  • Mozart, Clarinet Concerto (first movement) or Weber, Clarinet Concerto, no. 2 (first movement)
  • Solo passages from Rimsky-Korsakov, Capriccio Espagnol
  • Mendelssohn, Scherzo from A Midsummer Night's Dream
  • Solo piece selected by the student

 

Graduate

 

  • Mozart, Clarinet Concerto 
  • Nielsen, Clarinet Concerto
  • Solo passages from Rimsky-Korsakov, Capriccio Espagnol
  • Mendelssohn, Scherzo from A Midsummer Night's Dream
  • Solo piece selected by the student
  • A major 20th- or 21st-Century solo work

 

 

FLUTE

 

Please note, due to an increase in applications that led to an unusually large flute department this year, CIM will only accept recorded auditions for the fall class of 2019. Please contact admission@cim.edu should you have any questions about this change.


AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

 

Undergraduate

 

  • All major and harmonic minor scales and arpeggios in two octaves 
  • Three contrasting pieces or movements of pieces, one may be an etude

 

Graduate

 

  • All major and harmonic minor scales and arpeggios in two octaves
  • Three contrasting pieces or movements of pieces, one may be an etude
  • Three contrasting orchestral excerpts

 

 

OBOE

 

A prescreening video is required. To accommodate prescreening, applicants are strongly urged to submit applications well before the deadline of December 1. Each piece of repertoire must be unedited and recorded separately. 

PRESCREEN REQUIREMENTS:

An etude of your choice from Barret or Ferling and a solo of your choice OR a live recording of a recent recital

AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Etude by Barret or Ferling
  • Baroque or Classical work
  • 20th or 21st Century work

 

 

SAXOPHONE

 

No saxophone performance degree is offered in fall, 2019 application.
