Brass Audition Information
Trumpet (BM)
l Two solo pieces of contrasting styles. Example: Kennan Trumpet Sonata, movement 1, Hummel Trumpet Concerto, movement 2.
l Two etudes of contrasting styles. Example: Charlier, etude #2. Arban, Characteristic Study #1.
ü Mussorgsky- Pictures at an Exhibition, Promenade
ü Stravinsky- Petruschka, Ballerina Danse
ü Respighi- Pines of Rome, offstage solo
ü Beethoven- Leonore Overture #2 and #3 trumpet calls
ü Mahler- Symphony #5, opening call
Tenor Trombone (BM)
A solo of your choice; Kopprasch 60 Selected Studies for Trombone, No. 7 and No. 13; orchestral excerpts including Wagner's Tannhauser, the opening solo, Berlioz "Hungarian March" from Damnation of Faust, the "Tuba Mirim" from Mozart's Requiem, and Ravel's Bolero, the solo.
Please note: Due to the off-campus performing schedule of Lee Allen, on-campus trombone auditions will not be offered on February 2.
Bass Trombone (BM)
A solo of your choice; Bach's Cello Suite, No. 5, Sarabande; orchestral excerpts including Haydn's Creation, Berlioz's "Hungarian March" from Damnation of Faust, and Beethoven's Symphony No. 9.
Please note: Due to the off-campus performing schedule of Lee Allen, on-campus trombone auditions will not be offered on February 2.
Horn (BM)
l first movement from Mozart's Horn Concerto No. 2, 3 or 4
l first movement from Strauss' Concerto No. 1.
l Orchestral excerpts:
ü first horn solo from Till Eulenspeigel (two calls in F)
ü the second movement solo from Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5
ü the solo from Brahms' Symphony No. 3, slow movement.
Tuba (BM)
Two or three selections—including movements from sonatas, concertos, and other solo pieces—of contrasting styles from standard repertoires; major and minor scales. Compositions chosen should demonstrate the applicant's ability in phrasing, sustained playing, and technical facility, including legato and staccato at varied tempi.
Please note: Due to the off-campus performing schedule of Dennis Nulty, on-campus tuba auditions will only be offered on February 2.
If you wish to audition on campus but cannot attend the February 2 audition, you may email Professor Nulty to arrange a special audition
date.
