Percussion (MM)

Prescreen Repertoire

 

In addition to the video pre-screening listed below, if applicable, applicants must submit Proof of English Language Proficiency.

 

1. Mallets

 

  • Two mallets – any 2 mallet movement from J.S. Bach Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin or Suites for solo cello – no repeats.
  • Four mallets – a 2–3 minute excerpt from a work of your choice.


2. Snare Drum

 

  • Long Roll ♩=80.




  • Pratt-The New Pratt Book: Conquering Legions of Rome
    • Play beginning to downbeat of m. 25.
  • Delecluse – Etude No. 1 from 12 Etudes pour caisse claire.
    • Play beginning to downbeat of m. 46 ♩. = 76.


3. Timpani

 

  • Long Roll ♩=80.


  • Hans-Jorg Bayer Etude #5
  • Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 4 
    • First movement, 2 before T to 3 before U ♩. = 80.

 

Live Audition Repertoire

If invited to a live audition, applicants should bring three copies of all materials.

 

  1. Mallets
    • Two-mallet solo of your choice.
    • Four-mallet solo of your choice.
    • Knowledge of scales and arpeggios.
    • Sight-reading.
    • Four standard orchestral excerpts.
  2. Snare Drum
    • Etudes from Cirone Portraits in Rhythm or Delecluse 12 Etudes or the equivalent.
    • Rudimental etude by Pratt, Wilcoxon, Tompkins or equivalent
    • Knowledge of rudiments and ornaments.
    • Ability to roll at all dynamic levels.
    • Sight-reading.
    • Four standard orchestral excerpts.
  3. Timpani
    • Etudes from Goodman method, Firth, Delecluse, or Hochrainer books or the equivalent.
    • Ability to tune accurately.
    • Ability to roll at all dynamic levels.
    • Sight-reading.
    • Four standard orchestral excerpts.

 

Percussion (DMA)

 

Prescreen Repertoire

1.  Mallets

 

  • Two mallets – any 2 mallet movement from J.S. Bach Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin or Suites for solo cello – no repeats.
  • Orchestral excerpts:
    • Xylophone: Porgy and Bess Overture – Gershwin; Firebird Ballet 47–48 and 127–133 – Stravinsky
    • Glockenspiel: Sorceror's Apprentice 4 after 17–4 after 19, 22–24 – Duka
  • Four mallets – perform one of the following works:
    • Marimba: Khan Variations – Viñao; Merlin – Thomas; Marimba Variations – Wuorinen; Velocities – Schwantner; Reflections on the Nature of Water – Druckman; Three Moves – Lansky
    • Vibraphone: Loops II – Hurel; Le Livre des Claviers – Manoury; Omar – Donatoni

3.  Multi percussion

Choose one from the following: Rebonds A , Psappha – Xenakis; Rogoshanti – Wood; I Ching – Norgard; 13 Drums – Ishii; Anvil Chorus – Lang; Jannisary Music – Wuorinen; Bone Alphabet – Ferneyhough

 

4.  Timpani

 

  • Long roll ♩ = 80.




  • Hans-Jorg Bayer Etude #5.
  • Orchestral excerpts:
    • Brahms – Symphony No. 1 – Fourth movement coda.
    • Beethoven – Symphony No. 9 – First movement coda.
    • Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 4 – First movement, 2 before T to 3 before U ♩ = 80.
