Brass Audition Information
Trumpet
2019 Rochester Audition Dates: February 1st, February 8th, February 15th February 22nd
MM and DMA: Pre-screening requirement:
l By December 1, all graduate trumpet applicants must upload a preliminary audition recording (video strongly preferred).
l The pre-screening recording should be a minimum of 25 minutes in duration.
MM and DMA audition requirements:
l Prepared repertoire for pre-screening
l The Rochester audition should also include a range of solo literature (including contemporary) and orchestral excerpts.
l Possible sight-reading
l Familiarity with high horns and transposition is required.
l Applicants in jazz studies and contemporary media should refer to the section on jazz for additional requirements.
Trombone
2019 Rochester Audition Dates: February 1st, February 8th, February 15th February 22nd
MM: Pre-screening Requirement:
l All MM Trombone and MM Bass Trombone candidates must upload a pre-screening video containing the following material:
ü One complete Bordogni/Rochut etude from nos. 31-60 of Book 1
ü One complete technical etude from Bitsch “15 Rhythmical Studies” or Tyrell “40 Progrssive Etudes”
ü A three minute excerpt from any solo work (piano optional)
ü Two contrasting orchestral excerpts from the standard repertoire
DMA: Pre-screening Requirement:
l All DMA Trombone and DMA Bass Trombone candidates must upload a 30-minute pre-screening video containing the folloconducwing material:
ü 2 contrasting solo movements/works (1 from the standard repertoire and 1 transcription) (15 minutes)
ü A short demonstration of the applicant’s one-on-one teaching ability (10 minutes)
ü A short example of the applicant’s proficiency on a doubling
instrument or genre such as alto trombone,
tenor trombone, bass trombone, tuba, or jazz improvisation (5 minutes)
ü Please include piano or ensemble accompaniment for these recorded performances.
MM and DMA Trombone and Bass Trombone audition requirements:
l 1 lyrical etude (such as, but not limited to, Bordogni, Panofka, Busser, etc.)
l 1 technical etude (such as, but not limited to, Bitsch, Tyrell, Bozza, etc.)
l 1 baroque, classical, or romantic transcription
l 1 complete, major work (concerto, sonata, etc.) originally composed for the instrument
l 3 contrasting orchestral excerpts as appropriate to training and experience.
l Possible sight-reading demanding proficiency in bass, tenor, and alto clefswind
l Applicants in jazz studies and contemporary media should refer to the section on jazz for additional requirements.
Horn
2019 Rochester Audition Dates: January 25th, February 1st, 8th, 15th, and February 22nd
MM and DMA:
Pre-screening Requirement:
l By December 1, all graduate horn applicants must upload a preliminary audition recording (video preferred).
l The pre-screening recording should include:
ü 2 movements of contrasting concerti or contrasting recital repertoire (with or without piano accompaniment)
ü 2-3 orchestral excerpts demonstrating contrasting styles, periods, and technical/musical attributes.
ü One etude demonstrating technical accomplishment
ü One etude demonstrating lyric expression and interpretive imagination
MM auditions requirements:
l Prepare 2-3 selections from the traditional and contemporary solo repertoire (which may include unaccompanied repertoire) and orchestral excerpts from several eras and styles, demonstrating advanced technical and artistic development.
l Audition will also include sight reading and transposition.
DMA audition requirements:
l Prepare a program of solo, orchestral, and etude repertoire demonstrating professional standards of technical and musical development.
l Proficiency in natural horn is encouraged.
Euphonium

DMA Pre-screening requirement:
l DMA applicants must upload a 30-minute preliminary audition video recording containing the following material:
ü 2 contrasting solo movements/works (1 from the standard repertoire and 1 transcription) (15 minutes)
ü A short demonstration of the applicant’s one-on-one teaching ability (10 minutes)
ü A short example of the applicant’s proficiency on either trombone, bass trombone, or tuba (5 minutes)
l Please include piano or ensemble accompaniment for these recorded performances.

l 1 technical etude (such as, but not limited to, Kopprasch, Arban, Charlier, etc.)
l 1 baroque, classical, or romantic transcription
l 1 complete, major work (concerto, sonata, etc.) originally composed for the instrument
l 3 contrasting orchestral or band excerpts as appropriate to training and experience
l Possible sight-reading demanding proficiency in bass, tenor, and B-flat treble clefsop
Tuba

DMA: Pre-screening requirement:
l DMA applicants must upload a preliminary audition recording (video preferred)
MM and DMA audition requirements:
Each of the following:
l One Bordogni melodic study
l One Kopprasch technical etude either #49 or #57 and two Verne Reynolds Etudes: #7 and #24 (48 Etudes by Verne Reynolds, www.bmacmusic.com)
l Excerpts: Wagner, “Meistersinger” Overture (Letter J to the end); Resphigi, Fountains of Rome; The “Bear” solo from Stravinsky’s Petrushka; and Berlioz, Recitative from Romeo and Juliet
l Performance applicants must also play the Penderecki Capriccio and the cadenza from the Hindemith Sonata
l Music Education applicants must play the Vaughan Williams Concerto, movements 1 & 2 and the cadenza from Mvt. 3, Hindemith Sonata
