Brass Audition Information
Trumpet
- Two solo movements of contrasting styles
from the major concerto and sonata repertoire.
- One Charlier Etude OR any etude of comparable
difficulty from another etude book
- Three excerpts from the standard orchestral
audition repertoire
- Scales in all keys; possible sight reading
and transposition
Trombone
The
applicant should prepare music of contrasting styles that best exhibits his or
her abilities. The music may be drawn from solo repertoire, etudes, orchestral
excerpts, etc.. Scales may be requested.
Bass Trombone
- A solo of the applicant’s choice (the
complete work, or certain movements of a multi-movement work).
- An etude by Bordogni/Rochut, down one octave
from printed.
- A technical etude of the applicant’s choice.
Examples: Blazhevich (tuba or Vernon edition), Tyrell (tuba), Grigoriev
(tuba), Gillis, Maenz, Pederson, or others.
- Orchestral Excerpts
- Major scales in a moderate tempo
(articulated, tenuto) may be asked in order to hear sound and intonation
through the applicant’s entire range.
Incoming
Freshman candidates are not required to play orchestral excerpts, but may
choose to if they have studied and prepared them with their teacher. If you
elect to not play excerpts it will not count against you.
Transfer
applicants are required to prepare at least three standard orchestral excerpts
of contrasting style.

of the following:
- Mozart 2nd Horn Concerto in E-flat, 1st
movement
- Mozart 4th Horn Concerto in E-flat, 1st
movement
- Strauss Concerto No. 1, 1st movement
- Franz Strauss Concerto, 1st movement
Excerpts—choose three of the
following:
- Brahms 3, slow movement
- Strauss Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry
Pranks, opening
- Tchaikovsky 5, slow movement solo
- Tchaikovsky 4, opening
- Beethoven 3, trio second horn
- Beethoven 6, Scherzo and opening of 5th
movement
- Shostakovich 5, low tutti
- Wagner Götterdämmerung, Short
