Brass Audition
Information
Euphonium
Prospective students should prepare three selections, including one sonata, one concerto, and one unaccompanied composition. Applicants should select repertory from at least two musical periods.
Horn
M.M. Applicants should prepare two complete
solo works, one of which should be a multi-movement work such as a sonata or
concerto. One of the works can be an etude or an unaccompanied solo
piece. Examples could include any combination of the following: the
Mozart Concerti, Strauss Concerti, “Villanelle” by Dukas, “En Foret” by Bozza,
“Sonata” by Beethoven, “Sonata (1939)” by Hindemith, etc.; etudes of Kopprasch,
Kling, Maxime-Alphonse, Verne Reynolds, etc.; solo horn pieces such as
"Laudatio" by Krol, “Parable” by Persichetti, “Postcards” by Plog,
etc. Selections from each chosen work will be asked during the audition.
• Applicants
should prepare five contrasting excerpts from the standard orchestral
repertoire.
• Sight reading and all scales/arpeggios over the full range of the horn
will be required.
A.D. Applicants should prepare two complete solo works from the standard repertoire, one of which should be a multi-movement work such as a sonata or concerto. Examples could include any combination of the following: the Mozart Concerti, Strauss Concerti, “Concerto” by Gliere “Villanelle” by Dukas, “En Foret” by Bozza, “Sonata” by Beethoven, “Sonata (1939)” by Hindemith, etc. The chosen works are to be preformed in their entirety. Also prepare two unaccompanied etudes or solo horn works. Examples could include: etudes of Kopprasch, Kling, Maxime-Alphonse, Verne Reynolds, etc.; solo horn pieces such as "Laudatio" by Krol, “Parable” by Persichetti, “Postcards” by Plog, etc. The chosen works are to be performed in their entirety.

Songs, DeFaye/Knaub - Deux Danses, Ewazen - Concertino,
Hindemith - Tuba Sonata, Ritter-George - Concerto,
White - Tetra Ergon.
2. Required Orchestral Excerpts: Franck - Symphony in d minor,
Haydn - Creation, Kodaly - Hary Janos, Wagner - Ride
of the Valkyries.
3. Sight reading.
D.M.A. or A.D. in Bass Trombone:
1.
Select 2 works (minimum) from the following list: Casterede - Sonatine
for Tuba; Ewazen - Concertino, Ritter-George - Concerto,
H. Stevens - Tuba Sonata, White - Tetra Ergon, Williams
- Tuba Concerto.
2. Required Orchestral Excerpts: Franck - Symphony in d
minor, Haydn - Creation, Kodaly - Hary Janos,
Rossini - William Tell Overture, Wagner - Ride of the
Valkyries.

Tenor Trombone
M.M. in Tenor Trombone:
1.
Select 2 works (minimum) from the following list: Bourgeois - Concerto;
Bozza - Ballade, Ewazen - Sonata, Grondahl - Concerto,
Saint-Saens - Cavatine; Sulek- Sonata "Vox
Gabrieli".
2. Optional alto trombone work(s) of your choice.
3. Required Orchestral Excerpts: Ravel - Bolero, Mahler
- Symphony No. 3, Mozart - Requiem, Wagner - Ride
of the Valkyries, Rossini - William Tell Overture
4. Sight reading.
D.M.A. or A.D. in Tenor Trombone:
1.
Select 2 works (minimum) from the following list: Bourgeois - Concerto;
DeFaye - Deux Danses, Ewazen - Sonata, Martin - Ballade,
Milhaud - Concertino d'Hiver; Tomasi - Concerto.
2. Optional alto trombone work(s) of your choice.
3. Required Orchestral Excerpts: Ravel - Bolero, Mahler -
Symphony No. 3, Mozart - Requiem, Wagner - Ride of the
Valkyries, Rossini - William Tell Overture, Schumann - Symphony
3 "Rhenish".
4. Sight reading.
Trumpet
1. The
candidate should be prepared to play two complete works originally written for
the trumpet from the standard solo repertoire (typically works taken from
his/her culminating undergraduate recital). At least one of these should
be a multi-movement work. (i.e. Sonata or Concerto). Typical works include
Concertos by Haydn, Hummel, Tomasi, Gregson, and Arutunian and/or sonatas by
Stevens, Kennan, Hindemith, Ewazen. Single movement works by Honegger, Enesco,
and Glazunov (Note: In this situation the Arutunian Concerto is a
multi-movement work).
2. At least one movement of a solo work on Piccolo Trumpet (original or
transcription)
3. Scales and Arpeggios
4. Sight Reading (may include Transposition)
5. Orchestral Excerpts:
• Mussourgsky/Ravel: Pictures at an Exhibition
(Promenade)
• Mahler: Symphony #5 (opening)
• Resphigi: Pines of Rome (off stage)
• Stravinsky: Petrouchka (Ballerina’s Dance and
Waltz)
*No exceptions without the prior approval of Professor Romm or Professor Daval
