Voice Audition Information

Prescreen is required on the following: Choral Conducting, Classical Flute, Classical Tuba, Classical Viola, Classical Violin, Jazz Instrumentalists/Vocalists, Keyboard Degrees, Orchestral/Wind Conducting

 

On-Campus Auditions

  • The audition should consist of at least four selections, and at least one must be an aria
  • The repertoire must represent four historical periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary) and four languages (English, Italian, French and German)
  • The applicant will first perform a selection of his or her choice. The faculty will then request to hear other selections as time permits.

Audition Guidelines

  • An accompanist will be provided for on-campus auditions. A $15 accompanist fee will be collected on day of the audition.
  • All Doctoral of Musical Arts applicants must audition on-campus
  • All applicants who wish to be considered for assistantships or scholarships must audition on-campus
  • Once your audition is scheduled, please send your audition repertoire information to Professor Alan Johnson at ajohnson1@miami.edu
  • At the audition, the applicant should present:
    • List of repertoire prepared for the audition (five copies)
    • Current resume to include educational and performance experience
    • Representative list of previously studied repertoire
    • Photo (optional)
  • Recorded auditions uploaded to SlideRoom are acceptable for admission to the Masters Degree and Artist Diploma programs, but an on-campus audition is strongly encouraged. Video submissions should include 20 minutes of both rehearsal and performance footage. 

Auditions for Graduate Teaching Assistantships

All students applying for Assistantships must perform an on-campus audition and must have a completed application on file by December 1.

  • Applicants wishing to be considered for a Voice Teaching Assistantship must have completed a vocal pedagogy course, have prior teaching experience, and must upload a video teaching sample of studio/class voice teaching to SlideRoom.
    • The teaching sample should consist of two 20-30 minute lessons, with two different students. A male and female is preferred, but not required. The sample should address the issues appropriate to the particular student—breath, alignment, language, tension, performance style, etc., as it arises in the lesson.
  • Applicants who wish to be considered for an Opera Theatre Assistantship must have experience in technical theatre. The applicant’s experience will be discussed at the singing audition.
