Brass Audition Information

Trumpet

UNDERGRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

• Two contrasting études showing the applicant's level of technical and musical advancement.
• One standard solo selected from, or comparable to, works by: Arutunian, Haydn, Hummel, Hindemith, or Kennan.
• One lyrical and one technical orchestral excerpt from the Standard Orchestral Repertoire. Examples can be found here.

Undergraduate applicants are required to perform their auditions on B-flat or C trumpets exclusively.

GRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

• Two contrasting études showing the applicant's level of technical and musical advancement. 
• One movement from a standard solo selected from, or comparable to, works such as: A. Honegger's Intrada, Halsey Stevens' Sonata.
• Three standard orchestral excerpts:
  Moussorsky - Ravel Pictures at an Exhibition, Promenade
  Respighi - Pines of Rome Offstage Solo
  Stravinsky - Petrouskia Ballerina Dance 

Trombone and Bass Trombone

UNDERGRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

• A Bordogni (Rochut) vocalise
• A technical étude from Arban, Blazhevich, Kahila, Kopprasch, Tyrell, etc.
• Any standard solo (Barat, Andante and Allegro; David, Concertino; Guilmant, Morceau Symphonique; Lebedev, Concerto; etc.)
• Standard orchestral excerpts

GRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

• Two contrasting études showing the applicant's level of technical and musical advancement. 
• A Standard sonata (e.g. Hindemith, Castérède, Ewazen, etc.)
• A Concerto or other virtuoso solo piece
• A minimum of four standard orchestral excerpts

Tuba

UNDERGRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

Each of the following:

• One Bordogni melodic study
• One Kopprasch or Blazhevich technical étude
• Orchestral excerpts such as: Wagner, Overture from Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, (Letter J to the end) and "Ride of the Valkyries" or similar orchestral excerpts
• Performance majors: Vaughan Williams Concerto (mvt 1 or 2);
• All other majors: Edward Gregson Concerto (mvt 1 only) or other similar solos from the standard repertoire

Note: Be prepared to play any scale 

GRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

Each of the following:

• One Bordogni melodic study
• One Kopprasch technical etude
• Excerpts: Wagner, "Meistersinger" Overture (Letter J to the end) and "Ride of the Valkyries"; solo from Stravinsky's Petrushka ; solo from Berlioz's Hungarian March
• Either the Vaughan Williams Concerto or Penderecki Capriccio in its entirety.

Horn

UNDERGRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

• A movement from a Strauss or Mozart concerto
• A movement from a 20th or 21st century work
• A Kopprasch, Gallay, or Reynolds étude
• Five orchestral excerpts from standard repertoire

GRADUATE REQUIREMENTS

• A Strauss or Mozart concerto or the Glière concerto
• A movement from a 20th or 21st century work
• A Kopprasch, Gallay, Kling or Reynolds étude
• Five orchestral excerpts from standard repertoire

Euphonium

Note: All euphonium auditions are 45 minutes in length. 

BACHELORS DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

• An étude such as Bordogni, Charlier, Kopprasch, or comparable work
• Any standard solo

GRADUATE DEGREE REQUIREMENTS

• An étude such as Bordogni, Charlier, Kopprasch, or similar
• Any standard solo
• Standard excerpts (orchestral or wind ensemble repertoire)
