최근 어린이들의 자폐증상 (autism spectrum), 그리고 노인들의 치매 (Alzheimer’s patients) 치료 등에 임상 실례와 이론적 설명으로 효과를 보고 있음이 입증됨으로 관심을 끌고 있는 음악치료 (Music Therapy) 전공에 대한 질문입니다. 예전에 유럽에서 공부하고 오신 분들이 더러 이 전공을 공부했는데 지금은 미국의 많은 대학에 전공이 개설되어 있고, 국내에도 관심을 갖는 학생들이 증가하는 추세라 한 번 정리해 보겠습니다.
Music Therapy 전공이 개설되어 있는 학교에서 이 전공으로 BM 학위를 취득한다면 music therapist가 되기 위한 바른 길로 들어섰다고 하겠습니다. 이 경우는 music therapist가 되기 위해서 석사과정을 별도로 하지 않아도 되겠습니다. 피아노, 기타, 성악이 일반적인 음악치료에 가장 많이 사용되는 악기이고, classic과 jazz concentration으로 나뉘는 경우가 많고요. American Music Therapy Association (AMTA) approved school directory에 따르면 미국 내 대학 (학부)에서 70개 학교들이 music therapy 전공을 offer하고 있습니다.
학부과정을 지원하는 경우는 전공을 offer하는 학교들에 지원하면 별 문제가 없지만 대학원 과정을 지원하는 분들의 경우는 학교별로 학부에서 music therapy major 또는 equivalency 조건이 충족되지 않는다고 생각될 경우 curriculum에 과목들이 추가되는 경우도 있으니 유의해야 합니다. 참고로 music therapy equivalency에 대해서 다음의 설명을 보세요.
The Music Therapy Equivalency is designed for students who hold undergraduate degrees in field other than music therapy and who wish to prepare for professional certification as a music therapist. The Equivalency program leads to eligibility to take the national music therapy certification examination administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists.
Equivalency applicants whose Bachelor's degree is outside of music will apply for admission to the Bachelor of Music in music therapy as a transfer student. Applicants, who hold baccalaureate degrees in music, but not music therapy, are required to complete the requirements for the Music Therapy Equivalency prior to enrolling in advanced music therapy courses required for the MMT degree.
Combined Equivalency and Master of Music Therapy Degree
Prospective students, who hold baccalaureate degrees in music, but not music therapy, may apply for admission to a combined Equivalency and Master of Music Therapy program. In this program, students complete both requirements for eligibility to sit for the examination administered by the Certification Board for Music Therapists and Master's degree requirements. Students in the combined Equivalency/Master's program typically take only equivalency courses in the first year of enrollment and must complete all Equivalency requirements including the internship prior to enrolling in MUS 5050, MUS 5051, and MUS 5061, or MUS 5900. Continuation in the MMT program requires a grade of at least a B (3.0) in each music therapy course taken in each of the first two semesters of the Equivalency program and a cumulative Equivalency GPA of 3.0. Completion of both the Equivalency and the MMT is likely to require 3 ½ to 4 years of full-time study, including completion of clinical training.
