Dear Director Schroder:

Hi, Greetings from Korea! My name is Kathleen Y. Kim from Korea and I am very interested in applying to your Opera program. I will graduate from the arts high school as a voice performance majoring student in February, 2014, and I want to know every detail on your school’s opera program application process and performance opportunities. Do I need to take SAT? DO I have to take an audition? If yes on these question, by when should I fulfill these obligations? Your kind advice on my questions at your earliest convenience will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Sincerely yours,

Kathleen Y. Kim

Dear Ms. Kim,

Music at Simpson College

I am so pleased to receive your email. I will happily answer any questions you may have about our very unusual program at Simpson College. During my career I have worked with many fine Korean singers and pianists, and it would be a pleasure to welcome a talented young musician from Korea to Simpson College. This is a very special place, a small college, in a small town, close to the city of Des Moines and its airport, with a very strong music program exclusively dedicated to undergraduates.

Simpson offers a conservatory-style musical training but in the context of a liberal arts college offering a comprehensive curriculum in the humanities and sciences.  We offer the degrees of Bachelor of Music in performance and in music education, and the Bachelor of Arts in music. It is a place where, if you wish, you can concentrate solely on music, with very close supervision from the music faculty, as well as pursue whatever academic interests you may have. I am from Scotland, so becoming a professor in Iowa was an adventure for me! It was one of the best decisions I ever made.

In this email I am going to send you a LOT of information about our program, so take as much time as you need to look it over, and let me know if you have more questions. But first, I'd like to know more about you, so I know how to best advise you. Please give me a few short answers to these questions:

Some questions for you

1) where do you go to high school?

2) For how many years have you had voice lessons?

3) Do you play any instruments, and how many years of lessons have you had on them?

4) Do you have any languages besides Korean and English?

5) How exactly did you find out about Opera at Simpson or Simpson College in general?

Some of the reasons our students give about why they study music at Simpson College

* 2 fully-staged operas a year, one with professional orchestra, exclusively for undergraduate singers
* No competing with postgraduate students for performing opportunities
* May Term Opera Workshop (a biannual intensive immersion program)
* Our proven voice faculty
* Our alumni
* graduate school placement (in 2012, 100%, all with massive financial incentives - I can provide more info)
* a vast array of performing opportunities: recitals, weekly convocation, operas, choirs, choral masterworks programs, and more
* Our partnership with the Des Moines Metro Opera
* working with visiting directors and designers active in the profession
* one-on-one piano lessons - to develop the all-important professional tools for the singer
* classes are always taught by professors, never graduate teaching assistants
* faculty to student ratio
* dedicated one-on-one vocal coaching (musical preparation, recital preparation, role preparation, advanced lyric diction, etc.)
* Weekly sessions with a faculty collaborative pianist
* foreign language study / diction / vocal pedagogy classes
* rigorous and comprehensive music history and theory sequence
* all students study conducting

Admission and Auditions

I would encourage you to carefully peruse the following webpages, and apply for admission to the college. The admissions staff will guide you with the admission formalities. To be considered for a music scholarship, in-person auditions are recommended. In some cases we accept auditions via recordings (CD, YouTube, etc.). You may visit campus at any time, although we do have music scholarship weekends that may of interest to you. We know that deciding where to pursue your undergraduate degree is a very big decision, and we would encourage you to visit campus. We can schedule auditions at a time that suits you. Perhaps you would want to come in the Fall 2013 or Spring 2014. We look forward to meeting you!

Hello Kathleen,

I’m delighted to learn of your interest in our Opera program.  I’m copying Dr. Bernard McDonald, Assistant Professor of Music and Larsen Chair of Opera, so that he can share the details of our outstanding program.

In regard to admissions procedures you will want to submit an application found at this link: http://simpson.edu/admissions/international-students   and submit your TOEFL score as part of the application process.  We will accept SAT in lieu of the TOEFL, but we prefer the TOEFL.

Please stay in touch with me as we work together to help you get to know us better.

Thanks again.

Best Regards,
Gwen Schroder
Director of Transfer and International Enrollment
