Houston 음대교수이신 Andrzej Grabiec 교수님이 한 말씀을 인용하겠습니다. 참조가 되시리라고 믿고 텍사스 주에 대한 설명을 대신합니다.

As far as the choice of school is concerned, you may want to consider several facts:

​

1 The school doesn't teach you - the teacher does.

​

2 There is a constant fluctuation of teachers in the world, often triggered by better work conditions for them. In the last 10 years or so very many musicians moved from the East Coast (the area of New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia etc) to. Texas. Why? Because Texas offers a very solid strong economy and great support for the arts, unlike New York State for

instance. I know, because I used to live there.

3 If you look what Houston as a city has to offer, it could easily compete with New York City or other cities in that area.

​

4 People and institutions in Texas are very frugal with their money.  Their philosophy is: if it is possible to make something less expensive without losing quality, they will do it. For that reason the tuition and living expenses in Houston area are one of the lowest and most competitive

in the country.  It doesn't mean that they are of lesser quality.

​

5 The name of the school only means as much as the student's level of playing. In reality of life, to get a job or to be

accepted into any institution or management, one has to play an audition. At this point most auditions are done behind

the screen and the auditioning committee doesn't even know the candidate's name or the educational background.  The

candidate has to defend himself/herself by... playing well.

​

6 As far as opportunities are concerned, perhaps my own experience could serve as an example.  On March 21 this year I am going to

perform in Carnegie Hall, and this is my second Carnegie Hall performance this season.  One of my students is going with me and she will

perform as well.  I don't know how many New York students performed in Carnegie Hall.

​

There is no question that I would like to work with you here in Houston.  You may find this environment stimulating, high quality and friendly.  You may find life here just as stimulating and  less expensive.  Students in my studio are like one

family, helping each other, playing for one another.  Yes, there is a sense of competition among them, but it is a healthy

one.

I realize that from a large distance of Korea it is not easy to judge these things, and people there can only depend on

external sources.  You may have an advantage of forming your own opinion based on your personal experience right here in this country by seeing things for yourself and meeting people personally.

My suggestion would be: trust yourself in the decision making. I wish you the best of luck in this process, and perhaps

질문자가 언급한 학교들 중에 UT Austin은 대학원 학비가 $7,454 (한 학기 8학점 기준, out of state tuition, 졸업학점=30 학점), University of North Texas는 학비가 $6,118 (한 학기 8학점 기준, out of state tuition), University of Houston은 학비가 $7,681 (한 학기 8학점 기준, out of state tuition, 졸업학점=31학점) 이며 생활비를 지역에 따라 약 $9000~12,000 잡으면 세 학교 모두 1년에 $20,000 이하로 생활이 가능하다는 이야기가 되지요.

​타 주의 주립대학 또는 유명 conservatories의 경우 학비가 일반적으로 $20,000~40,000, 생활비가 $20,000~$35,000 들어 가는 것과 비교하면 큰 차이가 나지요. 학교 선택 후에 비자 받을 때도 이런 학교들이 비자 받기 훨씬 유리하다는 것도

사실이며 무시 못할 이유입니다.

입학난이도는 피아노 전공의 경우 UT Austin=UNT>U of Houston 순이며 장학금 수혜 난이도는 UT Austin>UNT>U of

Houston이라고 말할 수 있는데, 이 세 학교들의 장학금 액수는 그렇게 많지 않으며 오디션 성적이 우수한 학생들에게 out-of state tuition을 in state tuition으로 내게 해 준다는 것을 중요내용으로 하고 있습니다. 이런 경우 학비가 50% 이상 절감되니까 학생들에게 도움이 된다고 하겠습니다.

Illinois 주에서는 UIUC와 Northern Illinois University를 언급했는데, 이 두 학교는 일반적인 주립대 의 좋은 음악학교로 제 사이트에서도 소개했지만 학비와 생활비가 여타 주와 비교해 그렇게 저렴하다고는 할 수 없겠습니다. 입학 난이도와 장학금 수혜 난이도는 UIUC>NIU 순이고요. 이 두 학교 정보 사이트입니다. 참조하세요.

Indiana University at Bloomington을 언급하셨는데, 이 학교는 음대수준으로 Juilliard, Curtis, Eastman과 모든 면에서 비교되는 학교이고, 만약 이 학교에 대학원 과정 입학이 될 정도의 실력이라면 이 보다 조금 입학난이도가 낮은 학교를 선택하시면 많은 장학금혜택을 받을 수 있겠습니다. 앞에서 언급한 재정적인 여건을 고려한다면 이 학교를 언급하신 것은 이해가 조금 안 되는 부분입니다. 전화를 한 번 주시면 여기에 대해서 더 말씀 드릴 수 있겠습니다.

Ohio 주 CCM/U of Cincinnati 장학금에 대해서 말씀하셨습니다. 예전 (5~10년 전)에 여타 유명음대와 비교했을 때는 사실입니다. 하지만 현재 지난 4~5년을 돌아 보면 그렇지도 않습니다. 학교의 명성도 높아 졌고 재정상태도 그렇지 않습니다. 더구나 최근 학비도 올랐습니다.

​

장학금은 본인의 수준을 정확히 파악하고 본인의 수준에 맞는 학교보다 조금 낮춰서 학교를 지원하면 장학금을 받을 확률이 높아진다고 하겠습니다. 본인의 수준에 맞는 학교라면 재정적으로 가능한, 즉 학비와 생활비가 싼 학교를 선택해야 하겠고요. 이런 경우는 Texas 주 이외에 고려해 볼 수 있는 학교들이 여러 학교가 있겠습니다. University of Oregon 과

Utah 주에 있는 몇 개 음대들이 그 예가 되겠지요.
