Woodwind Audition Information

 

 

 

Bassoon (BM)

 

 

l  Two contrasting études (from Weissenborn, Milde, Ferling, etc.) and one solo work demonstrating level of proficiency (a single movement is acceptable).

l  Scales (major required, major and harmonic minor preferred) and sight-reading are required.

 

 

 

Clarinet (BM)

 

 

l  Two contrasting pieces or movements – one demonstrating technical ability and one demonstrating lyricism and expression.

l  These pieces may be drawn from the standard clarinet literature - études (ex: Rose études), sonatas (ex: Saint-Saëns, Brahms, Poulenc), and/or concertos (ex: Weber, Mozart).

l  Sight-reading is required.

 

 

 

Flute (BM)

 

 

l  Perform two pieces in contrasting styles (e.g., Mozart and Hindemith) from which excerpts or entire movements may be asked, demonstrating the highest level of technical proficiency and expression.

l  Scales and arpeggios should be prepared from memory.

l  Sight-reading may be given and should demonstrate fluency and expression.

 

 

 

Oboe (BM)

 

 

l  All applicants must demonstrate knowledge of all major and minor scales.

l  One Barret Grand Study of choice.

l  One movement from a sonata or concerto of choice from the standard oboe repertoire.

l  Sight-reading is required.

 

Ø  Performance and Education applicants:

        Also prepare the exposition of the Mozart Concerto in C.

Ø  Performance applicants:

        Also prepare two orchestral excerpts of choice from the standard orchestral repertoire.

 

 

 

Alto saxophone (BM)

 

l  One étude from the W. Ferling 48 Famous Studies.

l  Perform one of the following selections:

 

ü  Paul Creston, Sonata for Alto Saxophone, movements 1 and/or 3

 

                                       or

 

ü  Jacque Ibert, Concertino da Camera for Alto Saxophone, movements 1 and/or 3.

 

l  Sight-reading and all major and minor scales (performed on full range of the instrument at sixteenth notes = 100) are required.
