Voice Audition Information

Voice Performance or Pedagogy (MM)

 

Video Prescreening (required)

 

l  One operatic aria

l  One Renaissance or Baroque period art song

l  One Classical period art song

l  One Romantic period art song

l  One Contemporary period art song

 

▶ Four languages must be represented: Italian, French, German, English

▶ All works are to be performed from memory and with accompaniment.

▶ Each prescreen selection may be recorded in a separate video. Upload and attach your video prescreening to the Butler

    School of Music application form and submit by December 1. Audio-     only prescreening submissions do not qualify.

▶ If you are requesting a Butler School-provided accompanist be prepared to upload your piano sheet music as well.

 

Audition (if invited) 

 

l  Your live audition repertoire should be the same as your prescreening repertoire.

l  Please bring copyright compliant scores to your audition.

l  Provide seven copies of a resume and repertoire list to the voice faculty at the audition. The documents must include the following information:

 

ü  Name of applicant

ü  Accompanist (if known)

ü  Title and composer of each selection

Accompaniment is required for voice auditions on The University of Texas at Austin campus. If you select a university-provided accompanist (free of charge) on the Butler School of Music application, your music must be attached to the Butler School of Music application form before submission.

Language Requirement

 

All entering graduate students in Voice Performance must have the equivalent or better of the required language and diction courses for the Bachelor of Music degree at The University of Texas at Austin. The requirement consists of one semester each of Italian, French and German, and two semesters of singing diction. Deficiencies in any of these areas must be fulfilled prior to graduation.

l  Dramatic Reading: Include a two to four minute performance of a dramatic reading in English from a theater piece, play or monologue. The dramatic reading must be memorized.

 

All works are to be performed from memory and with accompaniment.
Each prescreen selection may be recorded in a separate video. Upload and attach your video prescreening to the Butler School of Music application form and submit by December 1. Audio-only prescreening submissions do not qualify.

l  Two art songs in contrasting languages and representing different stylistic periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Contemporary)

l  Dramatic Reading: Include a two to four minute performance of a dramatic reading in English from a theater piece, play or monologue. The dramatic reading must be memorized.

 

▶ Operatic arias should demonstrate your full vocal potential (range, agility, style, etc.).


▶ All works are to be performed from memory and with accompaniment.

    School of Music application form and submit by December 1. Audio-only prescreening submissions do not qualify.
