Strings Audition Information
Violin (MM & DMA)
Video Prescreening (required)
▶ Memorization is REQUIRED for ALL works.
▶ Piano accompaniment for the prescreening
recording is REQUIRED.
ü One movement of a standard concerto
ü One movement from 6 Solo Sonatas and Partitas by J.S. Bach
ü One Paganini caprice of the applicant's choice
▶Please note a movement and its "Double" constitute one movement.
▶Each prescreen selection may be recorded in a separate video. Upload and attach your video prescreening to the Butler School of Music application form and submit by December 1. Audio-only prescreening submissions do not qualify.
Audition (if invited)
▶Memorization is REQUIRED for ALL works.
▶Accompaniment is not required or provided for the live audition, but permitted
if so desired and provided by the auditionee.
ü One movement of a standard concerto

ü First movement exposition from Violin Concerto No. 3, 4 or 5 by W.A. Mozart
Viola Performance (MM)

▶All concerti and unaccompanied works are to be performed from memory in both prescreening and live rounds.
▶Piano accompaniment for the prescreening recording is required. If invited, no accompaniment will be allowed at the live audition.
▶Each prescreen selection may be recorded in a separate video. Upload and attach your video prescreening to the Butler School of Music application form and submit by December 1. Audio-only prescreening submissions do not qualify.

Cello (DMA)
l A complete unaccompanied Bach suite, from suites 4, 5 or 6
l A complete Haydn concerto
l Two other contrasting works or movements from a work
All concerti and unaccompanied works (before 1950) are to be performed from memory.
Double Bass (MM & DMA)
l One movement from a standard double bass concerto.
l Two contrasting movements from a standard double bass sonata or two contrasting movements from the Bach suites for cello.
l Any two standard orchestral excerpts chosen from the following composers: Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and Strauss.
Harp (MM)
▶One movement chosen from:
ü Lariviere: Etude No. 36, 37 or 38
ü Pozzoli: Studi di Media Difficolta
ü Bochsa: Studies, O. 34
ü Nadermann: Sept Sonatas Progressives
▶Two contrasting works from other periods
▶At least two works must be performed from memory; etudes may be performed from printed music.
Harp (DMA)
l Two contrasting movements of Bach or Scarlatti, one slow and one fast
l Two pieces from contrasting periods
l One movement of a concerto
At least two works must be performed from memory; etudes may be performed from printed music.
