Brass Audition Information

 

 

 

Trumpet (MM & DMA)

 

l  Two major compositions in contrasting periods and style, one being from the 20th century

l  Five standard orchestral excerpts

l  A major etude, such as from Charlier: Trente-six Etudes Transcendantes or Bitsch: Vignt Etudes (Leduc editions)

 

Trombone (MM & DMA)

 

Tenor Trombone applicants

 

Video Prescreening (required):

 

l  One of the following:

 

ü  David: Concertino (first movement)

ü  Grondahl: Concerto (first movement)

ü  Martin: Ballade

 

l  A Bordogni/Rochut etude of the applicant's choice

l  Two contrasting orchestra excerpts

 

Each prescreen selection may be recorded in a separate video. Prescreening repertoire does not require an accompaniment.

Upload and attach your video prescreening to the Butler School of Music application form and submit by December 1. Audio-only prescreening submissions do not qualify.

 

Live audition (if invited)

 

l  Bordogni/Rochut: Melodious Etude No. 60

l  One etude from Bitsch: 15 Rhythmic Studies

l  A solo of the applicant's choice

l  Orchestral Excerpts:

 

ü  Ravel: Bolero

ü  Mozart: Requim (tuba Mirum)

ü  Wagner: Ride of the Valkyries

 

Applicants may also be asked to demonstrate sight-reading ability

 

Bass Trombone applicants

Video Prescreening (required):

 

l  One of the following:

 

ü  Fetter: Variations on Palestrina's Dona nobis pacem

ü  Spillman: Concerto (first movement)

ü  Bozza: New Orleans

 

l  A slow and fast movement from a Bach Cello Suite

l  Two contrasting orchestral excerpts

l  Applicants may also be asked to demonstrate sight-reading ability

Horn (MM & DMA)

 

Video Prescreening (required)

 

l  One etude from Gallay Non-measured Preludes, Op. 27

l  Mozart: Concerto No. 2 or Concerto No. 4, exposition only

l  One contrasting movement or piece of the applicant's choosing from the standard solo repertoire

l  Brahms: Symphony No. 2, Op. 73, 1st mvmt, mm 454-477

l  Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4, Op. 36, opening (1st or 2nd horn)

l  Submit a short video that includes a verbal introduction and details your musical and career goals, interests (both musical and non-musical) and your reasons for applying to the Butler School of Music.

l  One complete solo work of the applicant's choice, commensurate with graduate level expectations 

l  Three orchestral excerpts of the applicant's choice

 

If possible, invited auditionees are encouraged to arrive one day early to take a lesson with Professor Hughes.

 

 

Euphonium (MM & DMA)

 

l  One solo of the applicant’s choice, commensurate with graduate level expectations.

l  Band excerpts – select four of the following (from the USAF audition list)

 

ü  Barber: Commando March, letter B - C

ü  Holst: Second Suite for Military Band, 1st movement, solo section, letter E – G, and 4th movement letter G to end

ü  Smith: Festival Variations, mm. 79 - 109 and 274 - 323

ü  Shostakovich/Hunsberger: Festive Overture, #8 - #10, #21 - #23, #33 to end

ü  King: The Melody Shop

ü  Sullivan/Mackerras: Pineapple Poll, bars 5 - 9, after #1, #11 to end

 

 

 

Tuba (MM & DMA)

 

l  One solo work of the applicant's choice, commensurate with graduate-level expectations

l  Orchestra excerpts

 

ü  Wagner: Ride of the Valkyries from Die Walkure

ü  Wanger: Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg

ü  Berlioz: Hungarian March from La damnation de Faust

ü  Prokofiev: Symphony #5 (standard excerpts)

ü  Respighi: Fountains of Rome
