Voice Audition Information

 

 

 

 

 

A live audition is recommended for entering graduate performance students. The preferred audition date for graduate students is the Friday on-campus audition day. A video screening recording is required to determine advancement in the audition process.

l  Audition repertoire requirements for the screening recording are the same as the audition. The screening recording will be uploaded as part of your on-line College of Music application.

 

 

Voice (MM)

 

l  Repertoire prepared should include five selections, with at least one selection in each of the following languages: English, French, German, and Italian. 

 

l  Two selections must be arias (one may be from an oratorio), and three must be art songs. 

 

 

 

Voice (DMA)

 

l  To be accepted into the Doctor of Musical Arts program in Voice Performance, students must prepare an audition program consisting of between twenty and twenty-five minutes of music.

 

l  Selections should be in a variety of styles, and include songs or arias in English, French, Italian, and German. At least one opera or oratorio aria should be included.

 

l  Students should not expect to sing the entire program.

 

▶During the audition, in addition to singing, applicants to the DMA program will be asked to discuss in 2-3 minutes their

  research  interests and what related field they intend to pursue. Related field options are opera, vocal pedagogy, performing

  arts health, early music, contemporary music, entrepreneurship, music history, ethnomusicology, theory, and conducting.

 

 

 

Teaching Fellows Application and Awarding Process 

 

 

l  The deadline for submitting Teaching Fellowship Application materials for both current and prospective students will be December 31.  Materials must include:

 

ü  A current resume.

 

ü  A 750 - 900 word teaching philosophy.

 

ü  A 30’ video recording of a lesson, including both vocal exercises and the coaching of repertoire.

 

 

 

l  Applicants are strongly encouraged to work with an advanced high school senior or first or second-year undergraduate student for their sample lesson. 

 

l  Faculty will individually choose their top five applicants, ranking them 1-5, with 1 being the best score. Rankings will be turned in to the Division Chair by 5:00 p.m. on the Monday following the last audition day.

 

l  Within one week of the last audition date, the voice faculty will meet to discuss the results of the ranking and choose those who will be awarded a TF.

 

l  DMA applicants who are awarded a TF will be eligible to retain the fellowship for a maximum of the first three years* of their doctoral study. 

 

l  Current DMA students who are awarded a TF, will be eligible to retain the fellowship up through their third year* of doctoral study, i.e., one or two years, and it is assumed these will be consecutive years.
