    Required graduate live audition repertoire

     

    l  Two contrasting solos of your choice 
    (examples: Mozart No. 2 or No. 4 contrasted with a Strauss concerto)

    l  Prepare excerpts which cover the following criteria:

     

    ü  soft and low (examples: Mahler 1st low tutti or Variation 8 of Strauss’ Don Quixote

    ü  soft and high (examples: Ravel G major piano concerto or Pavane) 

    ü  loud and low (examples: Shostakovich 5th low tutti or Variation 7 of Don Quixote

    ü  loud and high (examples: Beethoven 7th or Wagner Siegfried Call)

    ü  full range (examples: openings of Ein Heldenleben or Till Eulenspiegel)

    Tuba (MM)

     

    Once your graduate application has been received, your audition will be scheduled. Please note that there may be times in the season when scheduling is backlogged. If you have not heard from us by January 4, 2019, please email us.

    Prospective graduate students wishing to audition may contact David Kirk personally to discuss their application.

     

    Live audition repertoire

     

    l  All major/ minor scales and arpeggios in two octaves (one chromatic scale in three octaves)

    l  A solo piece or concerto movement of your choice

    l  Two contrasting (lyrical/technical) études

    l  Standard orchestral excerpts

    l  Expect sight-reading

     

    If preferred, solo works may be performed on Bass Tuba, but graduate applicants should perform the majority (or all) of their audition on Contrabass Tuba. It is not necessary to transport two instruments to your audition.
