Conducting Audition Information

 

 

Orchestral Conducting (MM & PS)

 

A prescreening video is required. A video of the applicant conducting under rehearsal or performance conditions of orchestra or chamber ensemble must be submitted. An additional video demonstrating technical and musical accomplishment of the applicant on an instrument is required. These recordings must be submitted at the time of application and applicant needs to present two contrasting selections of the applicant's choice for the instrumental performance selections.

 

Students must be available for a live audition at our Cleveland campus. Any recorded auditions will not be accepted.

 

Ensembles perform for conducting auditions, under rehearsal conditions, and the following repertoire is required:

 

  • Mozart, Cosí fan Tutte, recitative "Ah scostati", which precedes the aria "Smanie implacabile" (#11)
  • Wagner, Siegfried Idyll
  • Tchaikovsky, Serenade for Strings, third movement

 

On the scheduled audition date, each applicant must complete the following:

 

  • an interview with the Director of the Orchestral Program
  • all admission examinations
  • a written test of general knowledge, which includes score identification, foreign language terms, and transposition
  • a piano proficiency examination; each applicant must perform a solo work of choice that best reflects ability and be prepared to do sight-reading.
