Woodwind Audition Information
Bassoon (BM)
2020 Rochester Audition Dates: February 14th, February 21st, and February 28th
Pre-screen recording:
Upload a video recording within your online application which includes the following repertoire
l Three to five minute solo of the applicant’s choice.
l One Milde étude from Op. 24
l Orchestral Excerpt, Ravel: Bolero Solo (rehearsal 2 to 3)
Live Audition:
Applicants who are invited to a live audition should be prepared to perform the following:
l All major, and either harmonic OR melodic minor scales, using the complete range of the instrument up to a high B or C depending on the key.
l Milde Concert Study #29 op. 26
l A standard concerto of the applicant’s choice
l One piece written since 1950 of the applicant’s choice
l Orchestral Excerpts:
ü Ravel: Bolero rehearsal 2 to 3; and
ü Tchaikovsky: Symphony no. 4: mvt. II, m. 274 to end
l Sight Reading
Clarinet (BM)
2020 Rochester Audition Dates: February 7th, February 14th, February 21st, and February 28th
Pre-screening requirement:
Before December 1, all clarinet applicants seeking a live audition must upload a pre-screen video recording. Your video should include
the following:
l One etude from Rose 32 Etudes
l Mozart Concerto, K.622, First movement exposition with piano accompaniment
l Beethoven Symphony No. 6, Second movement: from one bar before D through two bars after E (mm. 68-77)
l Mendelssohn, A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Scherzo): Beginning to bar 48
Live Audition: If approved from pre-screening, the applicant will perform the following at the live audition, without piano accompaniment.
l Two Etudes from Rose 32 Etudes
ü -One slow etude from the following: 1, 11, 13, 19, 21, or 31
ü -One fast etude from the following: 10, 16, 20, or 24
l One of the following solo works:
ü Mozart Concerto, K. 622: Movement 1
ü Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie (complete)
l One 20th or 21st century unaccompanied solo, such as:
ü Donald Martino A Set for Clarinet (first movement)
ü Olivier Messiaen Abyss of the Birds (complete)
ü Miklos Rozsa Sonatina Op. 27 (first movement)
ü William O. Smith Five Pieces (two contrasting movements)
ü Igor Stravinsky Three Pieces (complete)
ü Heinrich Sutermeister Capriccio (complete)
l All three of the following orchestral selections:
ü Beethoven Symphony No. 6 First movement: two bars before K to the end of the solo (mm. 474 to 492)
ü Second movement: one bar before D through two bars before E (mm. 68-77)
ü Mendelssohn A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Scherzo) Beginning to bar 48
ü Rimsky-Korsakov Capriccio Espagnol First Movement: from A to B; and from C to the end of the movement
Flute (BM)
2020 Rochester Audition Dates: February 7th, February 14th, February 21st, and February 28th
Pre-screening requirement:
l Before December 1, all flute applicants seeking a live audition must upload a pre-screen video.
l The pre-screening recording must include each of the following items. It can be recorded either with or without piano accompaniment.
ü Mozart: Entire first and second movements plus cadenzas from either D or G major concerto
ü J.S. Bach: 2 movements from a sonata or partita of your choice
ü A work of your choice
l The following 3 standard orchestral excerpts (not the entire work):
ü Beethoven: Leonore Overture #3: mm. 328 through 360
ü Brahms: Symphony IV; Movement 4, mm. 89-103
ü Mendelssohn: Scherzo from Midsummer Night’s Dream; from 12 measures before P to the end.
Live Audition – Each of the following:
l A Mozart concerto
l A sonata or partita by J. S. Bach
l A work of your choice
l Orchestral excerpts as appropriate to training and experience
Oboe (BM)
2020 Rochester Audition Dates: February 7th, February 14th, February 21st, and February 28th
l Any concerto from the standard repertoire (such as Mozart, Marcello, Strauss, etc.) ORany sonata from the standard repertoire (such as Handel or Hindemith)
l A standard study, such as Barret or Ferling
l Orchestral excerpts as appropriate to training and experience
Saxophone (BM)
2020 Rochester Audition Dates: February 7th, February 14th and February 21st
Pre-screening requirement:
l Before December 1, all saxophone applicants seeking a live audition must upload a preliminary audition video recording.
l Please make a video recording of the following: Please upload repertoire in the order listed. If approved from pre-screening, the live audition should follow the same repertoire guidelines, and can present the same or different material.
Examples of recommended repertoire:
l Any concerto or sonata from the standard repertoire, such as Creston, Desenclos, Glazunov, Ibert, or equivalent
l Two etudes of contrasting tempo, such as Voxman, Ferling, or Karg-Elert
Applicants in jazz studies and contemporary media should refer to the section on jazz for their requirements.
