Strings Audition Information
Violin (BM)
2019 Rochester Audition Dates: February 1st, February 8th, February 15th, February 22nd
Pre-screening requirement:
l Before December 1, all undergraduate violin applicants seeking a live audition must upload a preliminary audition recording.
l The prescreening recording must include one movement of a concerto (accompanied or unaccompanied) and one movement of solo Bach.
Live Audition Repertoire
l A movement of a concerto from the standard repertoire by a composer such as Mozart, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Vieuxtemps, etc. Prepared repertoire should include either the first or the last movement including cadenza.
l Two contrasting movements from an unaccompanied Bach sonata or partita.
l An etude from one of the standard etude books, such as those of Kreutzer, Fiorillo, Rodé, Paganini, or Dont.
l Three-octave major and minor scales and arpeggios.
Viola (BM)
2019 Rochester Audition Dates: February 1st, February 8th, February 15th, February 22nd
l Three contrasting selections or major movements, which must be taken from three significant works representing different compositional periods. One of the selections must be by Bach.
l One etude or technical study
Violoncello (BM)
2019 Rochester Audition Dates: January 25th, February 1st, February 8th, February 15th
Pre-screening requirement:
l Before December 1, all undergraduate and graduate cello applicants seeking a live audition must upload a preliminary video pre-screening recording.
l The pre-screening recording must include 2 movements of an unaccompanied work by Bach and one movement from a standard concerto.
Live Audition Repertoire
l One movement of a standard concerto (preferably from memory)
l Sonata movement or other work of personal musical interest
l Two contrasting movements of a Bach suite (preferably from memory)
l Two contrasting etudes (e.g., Popper or Duport)
Double Bass (BM)
2019 Rochester Audition Dates: January 25, February 15th, February 22nd
l One movement from one of the following double bass concerti: Bottesini, Capuzzi, Dittersdorf, Dragonetti, Koussevitsky, or Vanhal
l One contrasting solo work of the applicant’s choice
l One orchestral excerpt of the applicant’s choice from the standard repertoire
l Two scales (one major, one melodic minor) of the applicant’s choice in two or three octaves.
Harp (BM)
2019 Rochester Audition Dates: February 15th, February 22nd
Harp applicants must audition either on-campus or by self-prepared recording. Regional auditions are not offered for harp.
Note: Harp applicants auditioning on-campus do not need to bring their own instruments.
l Bach-Grandjany Etudes for Harp – No. 3 or No. 6 only
l Dittersdorf Concerto for Harp, movement 1 – measures 23 to 80 0R Mozart Concerto for Flute and Harp, movement 1 – measures 44 to 120
l one solo work by Marcel Grandjany or Marcel Tournier
l one contemporary work for harp written after 1930
