Keyboard Audition Information

Prescreen is required for Regular Decision applicants in the following areas: contemporary/CAM, jazz, flute, keyboard, tuba/euphonium, viola, and violin

 

Prescreening

  • Two contrasting works selected from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and/or Contemporary/Impressionistic periods, with a minimum playing time of 10 minutes
  • A single movement out of a larger composition is allowed to count as a work
  • Prescreening repertoire and live audition repertoire may differ

Piano Performance Major

  • Baroque - A Prelude and Fugue or complete larger work (Partita, English Suite, French Suite, Toccata) by J.S. Bach.
  • Classical - A complete sonata (all movements) by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert (no exceptions).

  • Romantic - A major solo work (10-15 mins) from the 19th-century (no exceptions).
  • Etude - A virtuosic etude by one of the following composers: Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Bartok, Stravinsky or Ligeti (no exceptions).

All other music majors

  • Baroque - Any work by J.S. Bach, Scarlatti, Soler, or Handel 

  • Classical - A sonata (or one movement) by Mozart, Clementi, Scarlatti, or the equivalent.

  • Romantic and/or Contemporary/Impressionistic periods - Work of your choice

 

Note: All applicants are expected to play from memory. No exceptions will be made to the requirements listed above. All recorded auditions should include date-stamped audio and video made during the current year only and will be submitted online via SlideRoom. Each piece should be announced before it is played.
