Woodwinds Audition Information

 

Fall 2019 audition will take place on: 02/02, 02/09, 02/16/2019 (Saturday)

 

LIVE AUDITION

Applicants will preference their top two (2) audition dates for a live audition in Denver on the Lamont application. All auditions are approximately 20 minutes in length. The applicant will choose one of the prepared works to perform. The faculty will choose the second of the prepared works and possibly an additional work as well.

Applicants unable to travel to Denver

While Lamont faculty prefer to have applicants audition on campus, those unable to travel to Denver for a live audition may submit an unedited video audition in lieu of the on-campus audition. Recordings received after January 15 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This video should be uploaded through the Lamont application.

AREA-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

BASSOON

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. All major and minor scales
  2. Two (2) contrasting movements (for instance, movements from Vivaldi, Mozart, or Weber concerti, or Telemann F minor sonata), and an etude (for instance, Milde Studies Op. 24 or more advanced Weissenborn studies form the Weissenborn Method For Bassoon)
  3. Sight reading may be requested

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. All major and minor (harmonic and melodic forms) scales, three octaves where possible
  2. Mozart Concerto for Bassoon, movements 1 and 2
  3. One (1) additional standard solo work of the student's choice

 

CLARINET

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. All major scales
  2. Two (2) contrasting Rose etudes (one technical, one lyrical)
  3. First movement from a standard concerto: (Please select from the following but not limited to)
    • Crusell, Concerti
    • Mozart, Clarinet Concerto
    • Spohr, Concerti
    • Stamitz, Concerti
    • Weber, Concertino (complete)
    • Weber, Concerto No. 1
    • Weber, Concerto No. 2

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. All major and minor scales
  2. A complete concerto or sonata
  3. An unaccompanied 20th/21st Century solo
  4. Three (3) standard orchestral excerpts

Artist Diploma

  1. Same requirements as certificate in performance
  2. Any French conservatory solo

 

FLUTE

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. All major and minor scales and 3-octave chromatic scale
  2. Exposition of the 1st movement of a Mozart Flute Concerto (G Major or D Major)
  3. A contrasting solo of your choice (for example: any French conservatory solo, i.e., Fauré Fantaisie, Enesco Cantabile et Presto, Chaminade Concertino, etc. or a piece of your choosing)

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. Exposition of the 1st movement and opening of the 2nd movement of either Mozart Flute Concerto (G Major or D Major)
  2. A contrasting piece of your choosing
  3. Three (3) standard orchestral excerpts

 

OBOE

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. All major scales and minor scales
  2. Chromatic scale, full instrument range (B flat-F)
  3. One (1) Barret or Ferling etude
  4. Solo or movement of solo from one of the following:
    • Marcello, Concerto in C Minor
    • Any Handel sonata
    • Mozart, Concerto in C Major
    • Mozart, Quartet in F Major
    • Haydn, Concerto in C Major
    • Britten, Six Metamorphoses After Ovid

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. Two (2) contrasting movements from the following list:
    • Vaughan Williams, Oboe Concerto
    • Mozart, Oboe Concerto
    • Strauss, Oboe Concerto
    • Doráti, Cinq pièces pour le hautbois
    • Schumann, Three Romances
    • Telemann, Fantasies
    • Dutilleux, Oboe Sonata
  2. Two (2) or three (3) orchestral excerpts of your choice

 

SAXOPHONE

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. All major and minor scales
  2. Two (2) Ferling etudes
  3. One (1) solo work of the student's choice

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. Student's choice of any two (2) major solo works for the saxophone
