Strings Audition Information

 

Fall 2019 audition will take place on: 02/02, 02/09, 02/16/2019 (Saturday)

 

LIVE AUDITION

Applicants will preference their top two (2) audition dates for a live audition in Denver on the Lamont application. All auditions are approximately 20 minutes in length. The applicant will choose one of the prepared works to perform. The faculty will choose the second of the prepared works and possibly an additional work as well.

Applicants unable to travel to Denver

While Lamont faculty prefer to have applicants audition on campus, those unable to travel to Denver for a live audition may submit an unedited video audition in lieu of the on-campus audition. Recordings received after January 15 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This video should be uploaded through the Lamont application.

AREA-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS

Cello, Cello Suzuki, Double Bass, Viola, Violin, Violin Suzuki

 

CELLO

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. Major and minor scales with arpeggios (3 or 4 octaves)
  2. Two contrasting pieces of your choice, minimum difficulty level of:
    • Bach, Suites #1-3
    • Saint-Saens Concerto
  3. One Popper Etude or Piatti Caprice of your choice

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. Major and minor scales with arpeggios (3 or 4 octaves)
  2. A movement of your choice from the standard concerto repertoire
  3. Two movements (slow and fast) of unaccompanied Bach Suite
  4. One Popper Etude or Piatti Caprice of your choice
  5. Optional: you may choose, if you wish, to include a piece for solo cello from the 20th/21st century in addition to the above requirements.

Artist Diploma

 

CELLO SUZUKI

Graduate (MM)

  1. Major and minor scales with arpeggios (3 or 4 octaves)
  2. A movement of your choice from the standard concerto repertoire
  3. Two movements (slow and fast) of unaccompanied Bach Suite
  4. One Popper Etude or Piatti Caprice of your choice

Suzuki Cello Certificate

Students who are enrolling in the University of Denver Suzuki Cello or Violin Certificate program are required to receive acceptance for teaching training through the Suzuki Association of the Americas guidelines. (The Suzuki Association is responsible for all Suzuki teacher training that takes place in the Americas and approves and supports the University of Denver Lamont School of Music as a university long-term training center for Suzuki Method Violin and Cello.) A video of your performance must be sent into the Suzuki Association. For audition guidelines, please visit http://suzukiassociation.org/teachers/guides/audition.

Lamont audition requirements are as follows:

One movement of Haydn C M Concerto or Boccherini Bb from Suzuki Books 9 or 10, or an appropriate equivalent

 

DOUBLE BASS

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. Major and minor scales with arpeggios up to four sharps and four flats (2 octaves)
  2. One movement from a baroque sonata or Bach cello suite, any key
  3. Exposition from the first movement of one of the following concertos: Dragonetty, Koussevitzky, Dittersdorf, Bottesini No 2, or Vanhal
  4. One orchestral excerpt of your choice

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. Major and minor scales with arpeggios (3 octaves)
  2. First two movements of a standard concerto or romantic sonata
  3. Two movements from a baroque sonata or Bach cello suite, any key
  4. Two contrasting excerpts from the standard orchestral repertoire excerpt Beethoven 9 Recitative or Ode to Joy

 

VIOLA

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. Three octave major and minor scales
  2. Three octave major and minor arpeggios
  3. Two contrasting movements of a Bach work (Suites for Cello or Sonatas/Partitas for Violin, transcribed for viola)
  4. A movement (or movements, if connected) of a work of your choice, difficulty level of: F.A. Hoffmeister, Concerto in D Major, Hummel Fantasy, Stamitz Concerto, Opus 1, Schubert Arpeggione Sonata
  5. One etude of your choice, minimum difficulty level of Mazas, Op. 36 or Dont, 24 Studies, Opus 37, Kreutzer 42 Studies

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. Three octave major and minor scales with octave arpeggio series (Flesch system or equivalent)
  2. One etude of your choice, minimum difficulty level of Kreutzer, Rode or Campagnoli
  3. Two contrasting movements of an unaccompanied Bach (Suites, Sontas, or Partitas)
  4. A movement of a modern concerto, difficulty level of Walton, Bartok, Hindemith (der Schwanendreher)
  5. A movement of a sonata or work with piano (ex. Brahms Sonata Opus 120 or Schumann Marcenbilder, Hindemith Opus 11 #4)

Artist Diploma

 

VIOLIN

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. Major and minor scales with arpeggios (three octaves)
  2. One movement of a standard concerto, minimum difficulty level of Bruch Violin Concerto
  3. A contrasting work of your choice
  4. One etude of your choice, minimum difficulty of Kreutzer, 42 Studies

Graduate (MM)

Applicants are required to present all concerti, unaccompanied works, and virtuoso concert pieces from memory.

  1. Two movements of a major Romantic or Contemporary concerto
  2. Two movements (slow and fast) of an unaccompanied Bach Sonata or Partita
  3. A composition of your choice

Graduate (certificate in performance)

  1. Two contrasting works that best demonstrate your technical and musical abilities

Artist Diploma

 

VIOLIN SUZUKI

Graduate (MM)

  1. Major and minor scales with arpeggios (three octaves)
  2. First movement of a concerto, minimum difficulty level of a Barber Concerto, with cadenza
  3. One movement of an unaccompanied Bach Sonata or Partita One etude of your choice, level Rode 24 Caprices

Suzuki Violin Certificate

Level 2: Two contrasting pieces of your choice, minimum difficulty level of Mozart Concerto No. 4 or 5, 1st movement with cadenza
