Brass Audition Information

 

Fall 2019 audition will take place on: 02/02, 02/09, 02/16/2019 (Saturday)

 

LIVE AUDITION

Applicants will preference their top two (2) audition dates for a live audition in Denver on the Lamont application. All auditions are approximately 20 minutes in length. The applicant will choose one of the prepared works to perform. The faculty will choose the second of the prepared works and possibly an additional work as well.

Applicants unable to travel to Denver

While Lamont faculty prefer to have applicants audition on campus, those unable to travel to Denver for a live audition may submit an unedited video audition in lieu of the on-campus audition. Recordings received after January 15 will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. This video should be uploaded through the Lamont application.

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. All Major Scales, two octaves when possible.
  2. Solo work from one of the following or a piece of similar difficulty.
    • Barat, Andante et Allegro
    • Guillmant, Morceau Symphonique
    • Capuzzi/Catelinet, Andante and Rondo
    • Arban, Characteristic Study No. 1
    • Marcello Sonata in F major (2 contrasting mvts)
    • Marcello Sonata in F minor (2 contrasting mvts)
    • Sparke, Pantomime
    • Curnow, Rhapsody
    • Jacob, Fantasia
  3. One Etude from Bordogni (Rochut) Melodious Etudes, Book One.

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. All Major Scales, two octaves when possible.
  2. Two contrasting solos of your choice.
  3. One Etude from Bordogni (Rochut) Melodious Etudes, Book One.
  4. Orchestral Excerpts
    • Holst, The Planets (Jupiter and Mars)
    • Mussorgky/Ravel, Pictures at an Exhibition (Bydlo)

 

HORN

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. All major scales, two octave, in eighth notes, quarter note = 100 bpm.
  2. Kopprasch, Sixty Selected, etude 6, 8, or 9 or comparable etude
  3. Mozart, Concerto No. 3, K. 447, first movement, or comparable solo
  4. Sight reading to be selected at the audition

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. All major and minor scales, two octaves, in eighth notes, quarter note = 100 bpm.
  2. One Etude from Kopprasch, Kling, Gallay
  3. Two Orchestral excerpts of the auditioner's choice
  4. One solo work minimum difficulty of:
    • Richard Strauss, Concerto 1 or 2
    • Reinhold Gliere, Concerto, Op. 91
    • Robert Schumann, Adagio and Allegro
  5. Sight reading to be selected at the audition

 

TROMBONE

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. All major scales, two octaves when possible
  2. Solo work from one of the following or a piece of similar difficulty:
    • Barat, Andante et Allegro
    • Guillmant, Morceau Symphonique
    • David, Concertino
    • Galliard, Six Sonatas
    • Marcello Sonatas for Cello
  3. One Etude from Bordogni (Rochut) Melodious Etudes, Book One.

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. All Major Scales, two octaves when possible.
  2. David, Concertino, 1st movement
  3. Contrasting solo of your choice.
  4. Two contrasting etudes from Bordogni (Rochut) Melodious Etudes, Book One, Tyrrell, 40 progressive Etudes, and/or Bitsch, 15 Rhythmic Studies
  5. Orchestral Excerpts
    • Berlioz, Hungarian March (2nd Trombone)
    • Mozart, Tuba Mirum from the Requiem (2nd Trombone)

 

BASS TROMBONE

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. All Major Scales, two octaves when possible.
  2. Solo work from one of the following or a piece of similar difficulty.

    • Lebedev, Concerto in One Movement
    • McCarty, Sonata

  3. Bach Sarabande (no repeats)

TRUMPET

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. All major scales, 2 octaves when possible
  2. Pick one from the following selections:
    • One of the 14 Arban Characteristic studies
    • One major solo work for trumpet
    • One Brandt, Bosquet or Charlier etude
  3. Joseph Haydn Concerto for Trumpet, second movement

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. All major and minor scales, two octaves when applicable
  2. One Charlier etude
  3. Student's choice of a major solo work for the trumpet
  4. Two contrasting excerpts from the Orchestral Literature

 

TUBA

Undergraduate (BM and BA)

  1. Kopprasch "Sixty Selected Studies," #11
  2. Bordogni "Melodious Etudes" #1 (in the Robert King Edition) OR #4 in the Rochut Trombone book, down 1 octave
  3. 2 octave F major scale & 2 octave Bb major scale
  4. Halsey Stevens, Sonatina 1st movement; Gregson, Concerto 1st movement; or something of comparable difficulty

Graduate (MM and certificate in performance)

  1. Kopprasch "Sixty Selected Studies," #11
  2. Bordogni "Melodious Etudes" #1 (in the Robert King Edition) as written and down 1 octave OR #4 in the Rochut Trombone book, down 1 and 2 octaves
